Between Fez and Marrakech, the Desert and Dadès

A 7-day journey through the heart of Imperial Morocco, discovering historic cities, the Sahara dunes, Berber valleys and iconic kasbahs. From Fez to Marrakech, passing through Meknes, Merzouga, the Dadès Gorges and Ait-Ben-Haddou, an itinerary designed for those who want to immerse themselves in Moroccan culture through cities, desert landscapes and mountains.

DAY 1

Guided Tour of Fez

After breakfast at the riad, the guided tour of Fez begins, one of the oldest and most fascinating imperial cities in the Islamic world. With an official guide, you will explore the New City (including the Royal Palace, the Jewish Quarter and the train station) and the UNESCO-listed Medina, a maze of narrow streets and markets. Visits include the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque, the Al Attarine Madrasa, the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the Nejjarine Fountain and the famous tanneries. The final stop is at a ceramic workshop. Return to the riad in the afternoon.

DAY 2

Fez – Meknès – Midelt

Departure after breakfast for Meknes, the most recent of Morocco’s Imperial Cities. Famous for Bab Mansour Gate, El-Hedim Square, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the Bou Inania Madrasa and the Andalusian gardens. Walk through the souks and palaces, the Jewish Quarter and the Dar Jamai Museum. In the afternoon, the journey continues towards Midelt, crossing the Central Atlas Mountains and cedar forests. Arrival in the late afternoon.

DAY 3

Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, the journey continues south. You will pass through Errachidia, followed by the lush Ziz Valley, dotted with palm groves and traditional red-earth villages. You will then reach Erfoud, a town on the edge of the desert known for its marine fossils. Arrival in Merzouga in the afternoon, a village located at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. At sunset, departure by camel towards the Berber desert camp. Traditional dinner under the stars accompanied by Berber music.

DAY 4

Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Mifiss – Merzouga

After sunrise over the dunes, breakfast at the camp. The entire day is dedicated to discovering Erg Chebbi, one of the most iconic landscapes of the Sahara. After breakfast, you will set off by 4×4 to explore the desert dunes, also visiting some nomadic families who live in remote areas of the desert. You will then reach the village of Khamlia, home to descendants of people originally from Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy an authentic Gnawa music performance, an important part of African cultural heritage. You will also visit the Mifiss mines, now abandoned but still full of fascinating history and atmosphere. In the late afternoon, you will return to Merzouga.

DAY 5

Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dadès Valley

After breakfast, departure from Merzouga towards Rissani, where you will have the opportunity to visit its famous and lively market. After a short stop, the journey continues towards Erfoud, located at the gateway to the desert and also known as the city of fossils due to the abundance of fossil stones found in the area. The journey then continues towards the Todra Gorges, before arriving in the Dadès Valley in the evening.

DAY 6

Dadès Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait-Ben-Haddou – Marrakech

After breakfast, departure through the Dadès Valley, crossing the Valley of Roses, famous for the cultivation of the Damask rose, from which essence is extracted for the production of many cosmetics. You will visit the Dadès Gorges. The journey will then continue towards Ouarzazate, which expanded in the 1920s under the French as a military and administrative centre. Near the town are the Atlas Film Corporation Studios, known as the Hollywood of Morocco, where numerous films set in the desert have been and continue to be filmed. The journey then continues north towards Marrakech, passing through the Ait-Ben-Haddou Kasbah, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route continues across the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka, the highest road pass in the country. Mountain landscapes, deep gorges and Berber villages accompany the journey until arrival in Marrakech in the evening.

DAY 7

Guided Tour of Marrakech

After breakfast, the day is dedicated to a guided tour of Marrakech, also known as the “Red City” or the “Pearl of the South”. Main stops include the Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Koutoubia Mosque, the Menara Gardens and the Majorelle Garden, with an optional visit to the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Free time for lunch and tea on a terrace overlooking Jemaa el-Fna, the vibrant heart of the city. End of the tour in the afternoon.
