From Tangier to the Sahara via Fez

An intense and fascinating journey connecting northern and southern Morocco: from the imperial cities of Fez and Meknes, to the enchanting Chefchaouen, and finally to an immersive experience in the Sahara Desert, among nomadic communities, Gnawa music, and nights under the stars.

DAY 1

Tangier – Chefchaouen

Upon arrival at the port or airport of Tangier, departure towards the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen. The city of Chefchaouen is known as the “Blue Pearl” because its buildings, doors, windows, fountains and streets are painted in different shades of blue. For centuries, the city was considered sacred, and foreigners were even forbidden to enter. It was only in the 1950s that things began to change, and the city became a tourist destination that is still relatively little known. The medina is a maze of narrow, blue-painted streets, a tradition with religious rather than purely aesthetic origins. Inhabited by Berber communities, the city was founded with the arrival of people from Andalusia, which is why the old town resembles Andalusian villages, with narrow streets and walls covered with flowers. Many of its inhabitants still speak Spanish today. At the heart of the old town, you will find Outa-el-Hammam Square, home to the Tarik-Ben-Ziad Mosque, with its distinctive octagonal minaret inspired by Seville’s Torre del Oro, as well as a beautiful fortress. The modern part of the city is located further downhill.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 2

Chefchaouen – Meknès – Midelt

After breakfast, departure for Meknes, the former capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Visit to Bab Mansour Gate, El-Hedim Square, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and Dar El Ma Palace. Known as the “Versailles of Morocco”, the city offers gardens, historic palaces and authentic souks. In the afternoon, the journey continues towards Midelt, crossing the Atlas Mountains and cedar forests.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 3

Midelt – Ziz Valley – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, departure across the Atlas highlands towards Errachidia, the gateway to southern Morocco. You will cross the lush Ziz Valley, dotted with palm groves and Berber villages. Stop in Erfoud, known as the “city of fossils” for the abundance of ancient marine fossils found in the area. In the afternoon, you will reach Merzouga, at the gateway to Erg Chebbi. Shortly before sunset, departure by camel towards the Berber desert camp, where you will experience an unforgettable evening in the heart of the Sahara with dinner under the stars and traditional Berber music.

Dinner and overnight stay in a luxury desert camp.

DAY 4

Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Mifiss – Merzouga

At dawn, you will watch the sunrise over the dunes, followed by breakfast at the camp. The entire day is dedicated to discovering Erg Chebbi, one of the most iconic landscapes of the Sahara. After breakfast, you will set off by 4×4 to explore the desert dunes, also visiting some nomadic families who live in remote areas of the desert. You will then reach the village of Khamlia, home to descendants of people originally from Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy an authentic Gnawa music performance, an important part of African cultural heritage. You will also visit the Mifiss mines, now abandoned but still full of fascinating history and atmosphere. In the late afternoon, you will return to Merzouga.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 5

Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Azrou – Fez

After breakfast, departure for Fez, crossing the Ziz Valley once again. Stop in Azrou, among the cedar forests, home to the friendly Barbary macaques. The journey then continues to Fez, the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco. Arrival in the evening.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 6

Guided Tour of Fez – Tangier

After breakfast, departure for a guided tour of Fez, one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities and one of the country’s most important cultural centres. The day includes stops in the New City, with the Royal Palace and the Jewish Quarter, and in the Medina, one of the oldest and best-preserved historic areas in the Arab world. You will visit the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque, the Al Attarine Madrasa, Nejjarine Square, the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the traditional tanneries and a ceramic workshop. A maze of colourful souks will accompany you throughout the day. Departure in the afternoon towards Tangier, followed by transfer to the port/airport.
