From Chefchaouen to Fez and Marrakech: An Adventure from Northern to Southern Morocco

A journey from north to south to discover Morocco in all its shades: from the blue streets of Chefchaouen to the golden landscapes of the Sahara Desert, from the red-earth kasbahs to the vibrant medinas. An unforgettable adventure through nature, culture and Berber traditions.

DAY 1

Tangier – Chefchaouen

Upon arrival at the port or airport of Tangier, departure towards the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen. The city of Chefchaouen is known as the “Blue Pearl” because its buildings, doors, windows, fountains and streets are painted in different shades of blue. For centuries, the city was considered sacred, and foreigners were even forbidden to enter. It was only in the 1950s that things began to change, and the city became a tourist destination that is still relatively little known. The medina is a maze of narrow, blue-painted streets, a tradition with religious rather than purely aesthetic origins. Inhabited by Berber communities, the city was founded with the arrival of people from Andalusia, which is why the old town resembles Andalusian villages, with narrow streets and walls covered with flowers. Many of its inhabitants still speak Spanish today. At the heart of the old town, you will find Outa-el-Hammam Square, home to the Tarik-Ben-Ziad Mosque, with its distinctive octagonal minaret inspired by Seville’s Torre del Oro, as well as a beautiful fortress. The modern part of the city is located further downhill.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 2

Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknès – Fez

After breakfast, departure for Volubilis, a remarkably well-preserved Roman archaeological site recognized by UNESCO. After a short visit among its columns and mosaics, the journey continues to Meknes, an imperial city founded by Sultan Moulay Ismail. Famous for its compact medina, historic palaces, the Jewish Quarter and authentic souks, it is also known as the “Versailles of Morocco”. Arrival in Fez in the evening.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 3

Guided Tour of Fez

The day is dedicated to discovering Fez, the cultural heart of Morocco. With an official guide, you will explore the medieval Medina (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), with stops at the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque, the Al Attarine Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss. You will also visit the traditional tanneries, a ceramic workshop, and enjoy a panoramic view from the Merenid Tombs. The tour also includes a walk through the Ville Nouvelle and the Imperial City.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 4

Fez – Ifrane – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

After breakfast, departure towards southern Morocco, crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, known as the “Little Switzerland” of Morocco for its European-style architecture. The journey continues to Azrou, where the famous Barbary macaques live in the cedar forests. You will then travel along the scenic Ziz Valley, surrounded by oases and mountain landscapes. In the afternoon, you will arrive in Merzouga, a village located at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Shortly before sunset, you will set off by camel to cross the dunes and reach the Berber desert camp. The evening comes alive with a traditional dinner under the stars and live Berber music.

Dinner and overnight stay in a luxury desert camp.

DAY 5

Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dadès Valley

After breakfast, departure from Merzouga towards Rissani, where you will have the opportunity to visit its famous and lively market. After a short stop, the journey continues towards Erfoud, located at the gateway to the desert and also known as the city of fossils due to the abundance of fossil stones found in the area. The journey then continues towards the Todra Gorges, before arriving in the Dadès Valley in the evening.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 6

Dadès Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait-Ben-Haddou – Tizi n’Tichka – Marrakech

After breakfast, departure through the Dadès Valley, crossing the Valley of Roses, famous for the cultivation of the Damask rose, from which essence is extracted for the production of many cosmetics. You will visit the Dadès Gorges. The journey will then continue towards Ouarzazate, which expanded in the 1920s under the French as a military and administrative centre. Near the town are the Atlas Film Corporation Studios, known as the Hollywood of Morocco, where numerous films set in the desert have been and continue to be filmed. The journey then continues north towards Marrakech, passing through the Ait-Ben-Haddou Kasbah, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route continues across the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka, the highest road pass in the country. Mountain landscapes, deep gorges and Berber villages accompany the journey until arrival in Marrakech in the evening.
