Complete Morocco: North, Desert and Coast

A complete journey through the wonders of Morocco: from Chefchaouen, the “Blue Pearl”, to the imperial medinas of Fez and Marrakech, passing through the dunes of Merzouga, the coast of Essaouira, the elegance of Rabat and the Mediterranean charm of Asilah.

DAY 1

Tangier – Chefchaouen

Upon arrival at the port or airport of Tangier, departure towards the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen. The city of Chefchaouen is known as the “Blue Pearl” because its buildings, doors, windows, fountains and streets are painted in different shades of blue. For centuries, the city was considered sacred, and foreigners were even forbidden to enter. It was only in the 1950s that things began to change, and the city became a tourist destination that is still relatively little known. The medina is a maze of narrow, blue-painted streets, a tradition with religious rather than purely aesthetic origins. Inhabited by Berber communities, the city was founded with the arrival of people from Andalusia, which is why the old town resembles Andalusian villages, with narrow streets and walls covered with flowers. Many of its inhabitants still speak Spanish today. At the heart of the old town, you will find Outa-el-Hammam Square, home to the Tarik-Ben-Ziad Mosque, with its distinctive octagonal minaret inspired by Seville’s Torre del Oro, as well as a beautiful fortress. The modern part of the city is located further downhill.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 2

Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknès – Fez

After breakfast, departure for Volubilis, a remarkably well-preserved Roman archaeological site recognized by UNESCO. After a short visit among its columns and mosaics, the journey continues to Meknes, an imperial city founded by Sultan Moulay Ismail. Famous for its compact medina, historic palaces, the Jewish Quarter and authentic souks, it is also known as the “Versailles of Morocco”. Arrival in Fez in the evening.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 3

Guided Tour of Fez

The day is dedicated to discovering Fez, the cultural heart of Morocco. With an official guide, you will explore the medieval Medina (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), with stops at the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque, the Al Attarine Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss. You will also visit the traditional tanneries, a ceramic workshop, and enjoy a panoramic view from the Merenid Tombs. The tour also includes a walk through the Ville Nouvelle and the Imperial City.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 4

Fez – Ifrane – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

After breakfast, departure towards southern Morocco, crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, known as the “Little Switzerland” of Morocco for its European-style architecture. The journey continues to Azrou, where the famous Barbary macaques live in the cedar forests. You will then travel along the scenic Ziz Valley, surrounded by oases and mountain landscapes. In the afternoon, you will arrive in Merzouga, a village located at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Shortly before sunset, you will set off by camel to cross the dunes and reach the Berber desert camp. The evening comes alive with a traditional dinner under the stars and live Berber music.

Dinner and overnight stay in a luxury desert camp.

DAY 5

Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Mifiss – Merzouga

After sunrise over the dunes, breakfast at the camp. The entire day is dedicated to discovering Erg Chebbi, one of the most iconic landscapes of the Sahara. After breakfast, you will set off by 4×4 to explore the desert dunes, also visiting some nomadic families who live in remote areas of the desert. You will then reach the village of Khamlia, home to descendants of people originally from Mali, Senegal and Mauritania, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy an authentic Gnawa music performance, an important part of African cultural heritage. You will also visit the Mifiss mines, now abandoned but still full of fascinating history and atmosphere. In the late afternoon, you will return to Merzouga.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 6

Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dadès Valley

After breakfast, departure from Merzouga towards Rissani, where you will have the opportunity to visit its famous and lively market. After a short stop, the journey continues towards Erfoud, located at the gateway to the desert and also known as the city of fossils, due to the abundance of fossil stones found in the area. The journey then continues towards the Todra Gorges, before arriving in the Dadès Valley in the evening.

Dinner and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 7

Dadès Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait-Ben-Haddou – Marrakech

After breakfast, departure through the Dadès Valley, crossing the Valley of Roses, famous for the cultivation of the Damask rose, from which essence is extracted for the production of many cosmetics. You will visit the Dadès Gorges. The journey then continues towards Ouarzazate, which expanded in the 1920s under the French as a military and administrative centre. Near the town are the Atlas Film Corporation Studios, known as the Hollywood of Morocco, where numerous films set in the desert have been and continue to be filmed. The journey then continues north towards Marrakech, passing through the Ait-Ben-Haddou Kasbah, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The route continues across the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka, the highest road pass in the country. Mountain landscapes, deep gorges and Berber villages accompany the journey until arrival in Marrakech in the evening.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 8

Guided Tour of Marrakech

Guided tour of vibrant Marrakech, known as the “Pearl of the South”. You will discover the Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Koutoubia Mosque, the Menara and Majorelle Gardens, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Free time for lunch in the lively Jemaa el-Fna Square, the heart of the city, with musicians, snake charmers and street vendors.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 9

Marrakech – Essaouira

After breakfast, departure towards Essaouira, originally known as Mogador, located approximately 190 km from Marrakech. The city is particularly famous for its seaside Medina, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its fortress, whitewashed walls, relaxed atmosphere and artisan workshops give the city a unique character with a European feel. The coastline is swept by Atlantic trade winds for much of the year, making Essaouira a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. We recommend exploring the souk area and visiting the port of Essaouira, where you can observe the shipyards, fishing boats and the lively pier that turns into a fish market when the fishermen return. Don’t miss the opportunity to have lunch near the port and enjoy freshly caught fish.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 10

Essaouira – Casablanca

After breakfast, departure from Essaouira towards Casablanca. Casablanca is the economic capital of Morocco, where most of the country’s international trade is managed. Located on the western coast, the city resembles a major urban centre in Southern Europe. The modern city began to develop in 1906 on the site of an ancient Berber settlement dating back to the 7th century, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the second half of the 18th century. Outside the medina lies the district built by the French, the Nouvelle Ville, with its gardens and boulevards, shopping centres, hotels, banks and shops. The city’s most important landmark is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world. In the afternoon, visit to the Hassan II Mosque.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a hotel.

DAY 11

Casablanca – Rabat – Asilah

After breakfast, departure towards Rabat, the administrative capital of Morocco overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Modern and regal, Rabat combines history with colonial architecture. Recommended visits include the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a 12th-century mosque, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, where King Hassan II and Prince Moulay Abdallah are also buried. Rabat’s historic medina is fascinating, with cobbled alleys, local handicrafts and art galleries.

The journey then continues to Asilah, a charming seaside town on the Atlantic coast. Founded by the Phoenicians around 1500 BC, Asilah has the appearance of a town on the Aegean Sea, with whitewashed houses, flower-lined streets and fortified walls of Portuguese origin. Walk through ancient gates, bastions, art galleries and the medina decorated with colourful murals. The town is also famous for its golden beaches.

Dinner at your leisure. Overnight stay in a riad.
