Between Medinas and Dunes: Fès–Merzouga–Marrakech

An intense yet compact journey connecting two of Morocco’s most fascinating cities — Fès and Marrakech — passing through breathtaking landscapes, lush oases, Berber villages, dramatic canyons, and, of course, the stunning dunes of Erg Chebbi. Three unforgettable days to experience the magic of the Sahara and the authentic soul of southern Morocco.

DAY 1

Fès – Ifrane – Azrou – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

After breakfast, departure from Fès heading towards the desert, crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains. First stop in Ifrane, nicknamed the “Little Switzerland of Morocco” for its European architecture and alpine setting. Continue to Azrou, where Barbary macaques roam freely in cedar and oak forests. The journey proceeds through the scenic Ziz Valley, famous for its palm groves and mud-brick villages. Arrival in Merzouga in the afternoon, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Before sunset, a camel trek leads you across the golden sands to a Berber camp, where a traditional dinner under the stars and live Berber music await. Overnight in a haima tent in the desert.

DAY 2

Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

Wake up early to witness the spectacular Sahara sunrise, followed by breakfast at the camp and return to Merzouga by camel. The journey continues to Rissani, a historic caravan town with a bustling, authentic market. After a brief visit, move on to Erfoud, known as the city of fossils, where ancient marine remains are crafted into art and decor. The road then leads to the breathtaking Todra Gorges, dramatic cliffs carved by nature over centuries. Arrival in the evening at the Dades Valley, a land of canyons and kasbahs. Dinner and overnight in a local riad.

DAY 3

Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait-Ben-Haddou – Marrakech

After breakfast, the route crosses the picturesque Valley of Roses, famous for damask roses and natural cosmetic production. Continue to Ouarzazate, a city developed during the colonial era, now home to the Atlas Studios, the largest film studio complex in North Africa. Next stop: the majestic Ait-Ben-Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most iconic landmarks. After a panoramic visit, cross the High Atlas Mountains via the panoramic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest in the country. Arrival in Marrakech in the evening, marking the end of the tour.
