Fès and the Silence of the Sahara

A perfect tour for those departing from Fès who wish to experience a Sahara Desert adventure without giving up the rich history, art, and culture of Morocco’s imperial cities. Four intense days through medieval medinas, golden dunes, nomadic villages, and the magical silence of the Sahara.

DAY 1

Guided Tour of Fès

After breakfast, departure for a guided tour of Fès, one of Morocco’s four Imperial Cities and a cultural capital. The day includes stops in the New City, with the Royal Palace and the Jewish Quarter, and in the Medina, one of the oldest and best-preserved in the Arab world. Highlights include the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al Karaouine Mosque, the Attarine Madrasa, Nejjarine Square, the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the traditional tanneries, and a local ceramics workshop. A maze of colorful souks will guide you through the city. Return in the afternoon, dinner, and overnight stay in a riad.

DAY 2

Fès – Ifrane – Azrou – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

After breakfast, depart south crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains. First stop in Ifrane, known as the “Little Switzerland” of Morocco for its European-style architecture. Continue to Azrou, where you’ll spot the famous Barbary macaques among the cedar forests. The journey proceeds through the scenic Ziz Valley, dotted with oases and mountain landscapes. In the afternoon, arrival in Merzouga, a village at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Dinner and overnight stay in a riad or hotel at the desert’s edge.

DAY 3

Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Khamlia – Desert Camp

A full day dedicated to exploring the Erg Chebbi Desert by 4×4. Visit nomadic families living among the dunes, and the village of Khamlia, inhabited by descendants of West African peoples, where you’ll enjoy a live Gnawa music performance. Stop by the Mifiss mines before returning to Merzouga. In the late afternoon, camel ride across the dunes to reach the Berber desert camp. Dinner under the stars with traditional Berber music. Overnight in a haima tent in the heart of the Sahara.

DAY 4

Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Azrou – Fès

Early wake-up to watch the sunrise over the dunes, followed by breakfast at the camp and camel ride back to Merzouga. After a refreshing shower, begin the journey back north. En route, cross the Ziz Valley once more and stop in Azrou to see the Barbary macaques and relax among the cedar trees. Arrival in Fès in the late afternoon and end of services.
